A practical survey brief

Specify the answer before the flight

Five decisions that help an aerial survey fit an engineering workflow.

01

Start with the decision

Describe what the survey must help you measure or assess. A planning overview, a stockpile calculation and a detailed asset inspection have different acquisition and validation needs.

02

Agree the reference system

Specify the horizontal and vertical coordinate references and how the outputs will align with existing drawings. Resolve this before capture to avoid uncertainty during handover.

03

Define accuracy and verification

Image resolution alone does not establish positional accuracy. Agree suitable control, independent checks and how quality will be documented for the intended use.

04

Specify useful formats

Confirm the CAD or GIS environment, required layers and naming conventions. Deliverables are useful when the receiving team can inspect, integrate and revisit them.

05

Plan the handover

Include processing notes, coordinate references and quality information alongside the maps or models. Agree what questions must be resolved before the dataset is accepted.
